Let me preface this post with a quick statement about myself; I love animals, especially dogs. I have four of them, and they are all wonderful and loving creatures. I wouldn't give them up for anything in the world. So, imagine my immense excitement when I learned of a woman-owned business in the city of Kennesaw that services dog lovers like myself! The Good Dog Co., an intimate, niche pet store, is located right off of Highway 75 on Wade Green Road. Priding themselves in only selling all-natural, vetted pet food products, The Good Dog Co. sells what it would feed to its own animals. Owned by Regina Ryan, The Good Dog Co. opened its doors in July of 2010. The Kennesaw location has since expanded itself into the storefront that was located directly next to it, and has plans to continue expanding this year so that it can include a self-service dog washing station. Ryan also opened a Cartersville location within the past two years to help serve the pet lovers that are further north of Atlanta.

Upon visiting, you'll find the store is tucked away into the corner of the strip mall it's located in, but don't let its tiny facade fool you; the inside has plenty to offer. When you first enter, you'll most likely be greeted by the store's two cats; Hope and Hocus. After greeting them with scratches on the chin, you'll find the left half of the store stocked with apothecary jars brimming with biscuits, animal hide chews, and more. To the right of the store are more food products, as well as toys and grooming supplies. The back half of the store is where pet owners can find bagged dog and cat food. Priding themselves in selling holistic and vetted pet food products, The Good Dog Co. sells only what it would feed to its own animals. Kat, one of the fabulous employees at the Kennesaw location, told me that the distributors that the store works with are independent companies rather than mass producers of dog and cat food products and treats.

Treat station

Although the store has two locations, one of the impressive things about this business is that it only staffs five people, four of which are women! Whoever said you need a lot of helping hands to run a successful business has never met Regina! What else is impressive about this local woman-owned business? They give back to rescues such as Friends to the Forlorn (a dog rescue), Mostly Mutts (a dog and cat rescue), and they sponsor charity events whenever possible. The Good Dog Co. also has a customer rewards program and lets pet owners bring their pets into the store to shop with them. What dog wouldn't be in absolute heaven looking at the build your own "doggy bag" section?

After shopping at The Good Dog Co. and spending time picking out some treats for my own spoiled fur children, I can definitely say I'll be visiting in the future. The store is bright and colorful, the staff is knowledgeable and friendly, and the atmosphere exudes "pet lovers welcome!" My hat goes off to Regina for making a thriving business that puts pets' needs first. With following her passion of loving animals, she has created a treasure right outside of Atlanta.
